The Flowers Smiled  May 26, 1997

I apologize for my indescretions.
I never meant to intrude on your happiness.
I was here, and you were there,
and I thought it would work out.
I hold your memory like a photogragh
in the sun, slowly fading and cracking
along the edges. I said I would never
forget you, but I am a liar.
I remember you as we were, sitting in
my Datsun, laughing as the world went by.
the world laughed when we went by.
The flowers smiled, the birds sang,
the bees buzzed, but I never noticed,
I was too engrossed with your smile.
It called to me across the cracks
in my heart.  But now it's just another
pearly white gash, sinking its long-remembered
fangs into my side.  I wish you never
said goodbye.
